The NFL Draft is finally under a week away! After the countless mock drafts and the pointless reports of who teams will or won’t draft, it is almost time to start the real thing! With the draft almost upon us, let’s take a look at the two teams that most of the Chippewa Valley will have their attention directed at: The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings could draft a quarterback with their 8th overall pick and there is a good chance they will. But for me, I am not a huge fan of the top tier quarterbacks in this draft. Those quarterbacks include: Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles, and Teddy Bridgewater.
So who should the Vikings draft? They need help on defense. They could take CJ Mosley to improve their linebacker group or Aaron Donald to improve the defensive line. But the guy I have my eye on for the Vikings is Anthony Barr. Barr is a player that is hard to gauge in this draft, because many mock drafts have him as a top ten pick or one of the last guys selected in the first round. But Barr is a player who can play outside linebacker and even defensive end. He will give new head coach Mike Zimmer the opportunity to be flexible and creative in his defensive schemes. Barr is an athletic player who still has room to grow. He would fit perfectly with the Vikings.
For the second round, the Vikings should look hard at quarterback Zach Mettenberger. If he didn’t suffer an ACL injury, Mettenberger could very well be a first round prospect. The reason why I like Mettenberger, is because of his experience in a pro system that is similar to the Vikings. Mettenberger’s offensive coordinator at LSU was former NFL head coach Cam Cameron. Cameron’s mentor is the Vikings current offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Mettenberger would be a good fit with the Vikings.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers could have a lot of options with their 21st pick. They could easily draft a safety like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix or Calvin Pryor. Linebacker Ryan Shazier is also a popular pick for the Packers with this spot. But the guy I have my eyes on is linebacker CJ Mosley. There is a very good chance Mosley won’t be here when the Packers pick. But if he is, this is the player the Packers should grab. He is a very instinctive, fast linebacker who would be a tackling machine in the Packers defense. Even though the Packers really need safety help, let me ask this question: Would you rather have Micah Hyde play safety or Brad Jones play linebacker? I pick Hyde and Mosley.
In the second round, the Packers should have a lot of options at picking a player that will make an immediate impact for the team. They could get their safety here with either Deone Bucannon or Jimmie Ward. They also could look at a receiver like Allen Robinson or tight ends Troy Niklas or Jace Amaro. They also could pick up a center here like Marcus Martin or Weston Richburg. The Packers have a lot of good options in round two.
This year’s draft is very deep with a lot of talent. A lot of teams will find players in the later rounds that will make an immediate impact on their teams right away. It’s just up to front office staffs to make the right decisions.
