Nature's Edge Therapy Center specializes in intensive, family-focused therapy for children with autism spectrum disorders. All therapies at Nature's Edge are provided by licensed speech, occupational, and physical therapists, who integrate innovative and highly motivating animal-assisted therapy into their treatment programs. Nature's Edge is an active affiliate group through Pet Partners (formerly the Delta Society). Therapy animals provide immediate models and positive reinforcement, encouraging the child to readily participate in the individualized treatment program.
Nature's Edge Director Becky Payne commented on the success of using animals to assist in therapy: "At Nature's Edge we work with many children who are minimally verbal to non-verbal. Children immediately feel more comfortable with an animal around them because the animal is non-judgmental and provides complete acceptance. This comfort creates a bond between the animal and the child and encourages the child to make eye contact with the animal. Better eye contact improves attention to task and initiation of first words. Results for children’s communication skills can be powerful when working with animals.”
