Holidays from Marty's Blog

For Jews around the world, the eight days of Hanukkah came to a conclusion this past week. I lit our menorah each night, and I stood by in respectful silence and repeated the Hebrew prayers that have been said in Jewish homes for more than two millennia.

For Christians around the world,  celebrated  the day when the birthday of Jesus Christ is celebrated. While his exact birthdate remains a mystery, the commemoration on December 25th was common throughout Europe by the fourth century. The reason for selecting the date is debatable, but scholars believe early Christians chose it to coincide with pagan festivals celebrating the winter solstice.

In ancient Rome, the solstice was called "the birthday of the unconquered Sun," and public celebrations throughout the Empire provided perfect "cover" for early Christians who wanted to celebrate Christ's birth without drawing attention to themselves. As centuries passed, winter traditions from Germanic and Celtic cultures were integrated into the Christian celebration, giving us the festive, gift-giving holiday we know today.

We are in Colorado with our son Dan and after Church we enjoyed a great
Christmas, plus we watched back-to-back movies like "THE CHRISTMAS STORY" which always reminds me of mine in the late 40's and 50's in Chicago. YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT KID!
