More Stuff I learned while on the way to looking something else up JANUARY edition

My thanks to my friend and colleague Luc Anthony for giving me a few days off around the holidays to get everything done that needs to be done, have some fun, play games , watch bowl games, movies and parades, eat lots of goodies and Yes, READ. It's something I love to do and never get enough time to do it. " I'm one of those put more hot water in the tub after an hour or two I'm still reading " kinda guys. More often than not in my reading I stumble across all kinds of stuff that I really wasn't looking for but I found it anyway, so I thought I'd share.

* NFL Network President and CEO Steven Bornstein graduated from UW Madison in 1974. ( Badgers Annual Page a Day Calendar)

* The big deal about the end of the world on 12/21/2012 on the Mayan Calendar is because it's the last day of the 13th Bak'tun, the end of a 5,125 year cycle. ( Joel Stein's Awesome Column in TIME January 9, 2012 issue)

* John  Irving ( The GARP and CIDER HOUSE RULES guy) has another book coming out May 8 called IN ONE PERSON--It's his 13th novel and this one features a bisexual man reflecting on his life in the 1950's through the AIDS epidemic ( Entertainment Weekly January 6,2012 issue)

* France's Nicolas Sarkozy and Germany's Angela Merkel always KISS when they meet ( TIME Person of the Year Issue January 2,2012)

* Krgystan and Iceland are the only 2 countries that observe year round daylight saving time (

* In January 1888, The National Geographic Society was founded by 33 explorers and Scientists at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC (

*  In June, Los Angeles is preparing for a vote on a law that would require condom use in pornographic movies ( New York Times 12/28,2011)

* The US Population is growing at its slowest rate since the 1940's ( Wall Street Journal  12/29/2011)

* The Chippewa Valley Roller Girls will face the Iron Range Maidens on January 14 and there is something called "suicide seats--right on the track " ( Okay, I'll admit I'm not exactly sure what I was looking for when i found this story but it was worthy diversion.

* If we were born in Wisconsin, 72 percent of us stay in Wisconsin. If we move we move within the state, not to another state. ( St. Paul Pioneer Press 12/18/2011)

* BCS schools that have made the fewest trips to bowl games:  Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Duke, Indiana,Northwestern, Wake Forest. ( USA today 12/29/2011)  I have some thoughts--Indiana,Duke and Wake Forest are basketbal.l schools--Vandy is known for cranking our doctors and Northwestern  is a a drama school. Rutgers is from New Jersey, you might have to ask Snooki why they go to bowl games so infrequently.
