Willmar, Minn. The newest member of the Northwoods League from Willmar, MN is proud to announce they will be called the Willmar Stingers. The Stingers logo features a bee holding a bat and appears ready to hit a baseball wrapped behind the Stingers nickname with Willmar in a font below.

The logo and team colors will be black and yellow and were unveiled Wednesday night at the Holiday Inn Conference Center with special guest major league pitcher Chris Jakubauskas. Also on hand for the event was graphic designer/creator of the logo Justin Schaller, who resides in Eau Claire, WI.

Team owners Ryan Voz and Marc Jerzak are excited about the new name and the buzz that the “Name the Team” contest created. “We were very pleased with the turnout of names entered into the contest where there were over 800 names suggested.” We wanted a fun name, keeping with the Northwoods theme and the name Stingers stood out to us,” Voz said.

Robert Malmgren of Willmar submitted the winning entry and was the proud winner of a pair of Stingers Season Tickets for a lifetime.

Former Northwoods Leaguer and current Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Chris Jakubauskas took pictures and signed autographs for new Willmar fans. Jakubauskas played in the Northwoods League for the St. Cloud River Bats in 1999. This past season he made his Major League debut with the Seattle Mariners against the Minnesota Twins on April 8th. He finished his rookie season with 8 starts, 1 complete game, 27 relief appearances, 93 innings pitched and a 6-7 record. The Pirates recently purchased his rights.

To date, 60 former Northwoods League players have gone on to play Major League Baseball including nine players making their MLB Debut in 2009.

The Stingers will play the 34-home game schedule at Bill Taunton Stadium at Baker Field, where the capacity is currently 1,050.

The Northwoods League plays more games than, draws more fans than, and plays in venues superior to any Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America. The 17th season of Northwoods League baseball will begin in early June 2010. Willmar joins Alexandria, Brainerd, Duluth, Mankato, Rochester, and St. Cloud as Minnesota cities in the NWL; Eau Claire, Green Bay, La Crosse, Madison, and Wausau from Wisconsin; Waterloo, Iowa; Battle Creek, Michigan; and Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Minnesota Twins Vice President and General Manager Terry Ryan will be the keynote speaker at "Express Night Out" on November 16 at the Ramada Convention Center in downtown Eau Claire.

Ryan, who was drafted out of Parker (Janesville) High School by the Twins in 1972, became the fourth General Manager in Twins history on September 13, 1994. In 2004, Baseball America named Ryan the Executive of the Year and the Twins the Organization of the Year following back-to-back-to-back American League Central Division titles from 2002 to 2004. Ryan also received the Major League Executive of the Year award from The Sporting News in 2002.

Ryan pitched in the Twins' minor league system for four seasons. He posted a career record of 14-3, including a 10-0 season in 1973, before an arm injury cut his career short.

Other speakers at "Express Night Out" will include Owner and General Manager Dr. Jeff Jones, Field Manager and Director of Operations Dale Varsho, and 2005 Express players Jake Frombach and Travis Kempf. Mike Sullivan will emcee the event.

Speakers will start at 7:00 p.m. The Express invite all community members and 2005 sponsors to this free event to say "thank you" for a fantastic inaugural season and to discuss exciting plans for next season at Carson Park.
The Northwoods League announced this week that Mankato, Minn. and Madison, Wis. will host the 2007 and 2008 All-Star Games, respectively.

At the recent NWL Board of Directors meeting in San Francisco, CA, the Mankato and Madison affiliates were unanimously chosen to play host to the League's All-Star festivities through 2008.

"These are two of the best run operations in the Northwoods League and are very deserving of this honor. I will look forward to outstanding events in both cities," said Northwoods League President Dick Radatz, Jr.

Mankato, a member of the League since 1999, will be hosting their first All-Star Game in 2007. The Mankato club, who became the MoonDogs in 2002, set a new franchise attendance record in 2005 at Franklin Rogers Park.

For the Madison Mallards, the 2008 game will mark the third All-Star game to be played at Warner Park. The Mallards previously played host to the mid-season game in 2002 and 2003, when 4,310 fans witnessed an exciting 8-7, 10-inning win for the North All-Stars.
