Cancer prevalence is defined as the number of living people who have ever had a cancer diagnosis. This number is now up over 12 million people per year. The Busch family knows what it is like to have cancer in their lives.
Heidi: Heidi was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2009. She underwent Chemotherapy, Radiation and had a double mastectomy. Because she carries the BRAC-1 gene, she also had a complete hysterectomy, and is still in process of reconstructive surgeries.
Brett: Brett was diagnosed with a type of Myoblastoma in the back of his brain when he was five. This required surgery and a type of radiation treatment called Cobalt. He was a very sick boy for a period in his life, but beat the odds and graduated High School, got married and had three children. Forty years later he started exhibiting signs of something being wrong. In April of 2013 Brett was diagnosed with a type of Meningioma in his brain. This slow growing tumor grew slowly over time, and became very large. He underwent a craniotomy where they successfully took out a tumor that was 8x7x5 cm in size.
Brett has beaten the odds twice now in his life. He continues to recover at home, but is unable to work at this time as he recovers from this major surgery. With time Brett hopes to be able to resume work full time. Brett and Heidi live in Menomonie with their three children, ages 15, 13, and 7. They both have been very grateful for all of the support and prayers both with Heidi’s cancer recovery and now Brett’s successful surgery.
Friends and family of Brett and Heidi are sponsoring a fundraising event at the Veterans Center of Menomonie (E4710 Cty Trk BB) on Sunday, Sept 8th from 11am to 6:00 p.m. Dinner, entertainment, kids’ fun, silent and a live auction will be provided.
